Mike is a practicing economist, entrepreneur, and a veteran of over 50 years in Vancouver's venture capital community, with a focus on climate change initiatives. He particularly enjoys working on the earliest stages of corporate ventures.
Since 1968, Mike has co-founded two families of venture capital funds, which have made over 100 investments. He has raised private capital for numerous companies, including Wardair, MDI Mobile Data, McDonald Dettwiler, Ballard Power, Cellex Power, Questair, and General Fusion. His exposure spans a wide range of technologies, including mobile digital wireless, optics, fuel cells, remote sensing, solar photovoltaics and heat generation, flow batteries, semiconductors, quantum computing, wind turbines, electric vehicles, CO2 capture, hydrogen production, and fusion. Mike has also served as a director for many private and several public companies.
Mike co-founded the Rethink Climate in 2016 which is dedicated to starting missions that address the most significant market gaps in climate technology.
Mike has been involved in numerous non-commercial initiatives, including co-founding Vancouver's "Clouds of Change" Task Force in 1990 and serving as a director at Sustainable Development Technology Canada from 2001 to 2015. He has sat on advisory boards related to securities regulation, engineering, and environmental R&D, and co-founded both the Canadian Task Force on Early-Stage Funding and Fuel Cells Canada.
In 2020, he co-led a federal workshop on Permafrost Carbon Feedback (PCF) and co-founded the PCF Innovation RoadMap project in 2021. He contributed to climate change education for teachers.
Mike holds degrees from UBC and Oxford (Rhodes Scholar) and has received multiple honors, including the Order of Canada. And, proudly has many grandchildren.
